With his hometown team Luton Town, Lewis began his football career as a young kid. In 2009, the team won the Aarau Masters, a European 5-a-side Under-11 Championship.

In order to concentrate on his potential as a top-level 800-meter runner, he departed Luton Town in 2013. Lewis signed with Norwich City in 2014 to make his professional football comeback.

He participated in 2016–17 for Norwich's U23 squad. Lewis renewed his contract till 2021 at the conclusion of the 2016–17 campaign.

Lewis made his varsity debut for Norwich City against Brentford in December 2017, replacing Marco Stiepermann.

He started for Norwich against Birmingham City on Boxing Day of 2017. In the 93rd minute of an FA Cup third-round replay against Chelsea in January 2018, he scored his first goal as a senior.

Lewis received a new long-term contract in October 2018 that extended through June 2023 as compensation for being named the EFL Young Player of the Month for September 2018.

Along with teammates Max Aarons and Teemu Pukki, he was selected to the 2018–19 PFA Championship Team of the Year in March 2019.

Lewis participated in 28 Premier League games for Norwich City in the 2019–20 season. Norwich turned down Liverpool's £10 million offer for Lewis in August 2020.

On September 8, 2020, Lewis committed to a five-year deal with Newcastle United. But because of his inconsistent performances, he swiftly lost fans. As a result, in January 2022, he was dropped from the 25-player squad roster for the rest of the year.

Lewis was qualified to play for Northern Ireland despite being born in England because his mother was born in Belfast. In 2016, he made three appearances for the U19 team, serving as the nation's first representative.

He was called up to the U21 squad in June 2017 and made his U21 debut against Estonia. He received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland senior team in March 2018.

On March 24, 2018, he made his senior international debut in a 2-1 friendly victory over South Korea. Lewis was dismissed on October 9, 2021, during the opening period of a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.
