Insecurity: Northern Elders Tell Fulani Herdsmen In South What To Do

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) Tuesday called on Fulani herdsmen residing in southern Nigeria to leave the area if the safety of lives and property are not guaranteed.

Naijaparry reports that the Chairman of the forum, Ango Abdullahi, said this at a news conference in Abuja.

According to him, there was a move by some trouble elements to engage herders with violence in Southern part of Africa’s most populous nation.

He said, “We have heard in the few hours ago that some violence had already started to manifest in some sections of the country against the herdsmen, who for all know that would affect peaceful coexistence in the communities where they have lived for many years.

“Now, certainly, we are worried about their safety, like we are worried about the safety of every Nigerian who decided to live wherever they want to.

”But then, if there is no certainty that their safety is guaranteed by the authorities that are immediately around them or by the authorities that has responsibility for the overall security of all Nigerians wherever they reside, we are certainly worried about their wellbeing.

“And I think particular attention should be paid to what is happening hour-to-hour, day-to-day basis.

“If it is indeed true that their safety is not guaranteed in the places where they are residing, we would rather have them back into areas where there safety is guaranteed, and they should be coming back as much as possible to the North.”

There has been tension in the southwestern part of the country after the killing of Funke Olakurin , daughter of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, with some alleging that it was carried out by herders.

Olakunrin was killed by armed men last Friday while travelling along the Ore Expressway in Ondo state, southwest Nigeria.

In the meantime, the police have arrested some suspects allegedly involved in the killing of Olakunrin.

Spokesman for the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, confirmed this on Monday.

“We have made a lot of arrests on this matter, but we are doing the screening of those arrested to know who among them are the culprits,” he said, noting that investigations were still ongoing while the suspects would be paraded soon.
