June Brown had a long career in television, playing small parts in shows like Coronation Street’s Mrs. Parsons, Edna, the Inebriate Woman, Play for Today, and The Time Warrior in Doctor Who.

She also appeared in the nursing drama Angels, Churchill’s People, the police drama soap The Bill, and the cult sci-fi series Survivors.

She played Mrs. Mann in Oliver Twist and had a larger role as Mrs. Leyton in the period drama The Duchess of Duke Street.

She also portrayed Nanny Slagg in the lavish Gormenghast production produced by the BBC in 2000.

The fifth child of Louisa Ann and Henry William Melton Brown’s five children, June Brown was born on February 16, 1927, in Needham Market, Suffolk. Her maternal grandmother traced her Sephardic Jewish ancestry to England, Ireland, and Scotland (from Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy). She was a direct descendant of the famous Jewish bare-knuckle boxer Isaac Bitton through her grandmother.

She received her education at St. John’s Church of England School in Ipswich before receiving a scholarship to Ipswich High School, where she successfully completed her high school diploma.

She was relocated to the Welsh community of Pontyates in Carmarthenshire during the Second World War. She served in the Wrens in the later years of the war and received classical training at the Old Vic Theatre School.
