During his middle school years, Hyunjin was discovered by JYP Entertainment while he was out shopping with his mother. After two years of training, he joined JYPE without any prior experience.
He first became interested in dancing while watching the more experienced students perform on stage. He then practiced more by learning several styles of dance at SOPA.
His involvement in the upcoming survival show Stray Kids was formally announced by the corporation on October 12, 2017, at noon, along with his individual photograph and name.
He made his debut in the “Rap” and “Dance” parts. On December 19, 2017, the show's final episode made it official that Hyunjin would make his debut with the boy band Stray Kids.
