On August 1, 2012, the Blue Jays promoted Stroman to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats after he began his professional career with the Low-A Vancouver Canadians.

August 28, 2012, saw the suspension of Stroman for 50 games after he tested positive for the illegal stimulant methylhexanamine. Following his suspension, Stroman started and delivered five scoreless innings to help the Fisher Cats win their game on May 19, 2013.

On March 19, Stroman was assigned to the minor league camp after attending the Blue Jays’ 2014 major league spring training camp. He started Opening Day games for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in 2014.

On May 3, 2014, Stroman was called up by the Blue Jays following Brandon Morrow’s placement on the 60-day injured list. When he was called up, he was regarded as the organization’s second-best prospect.

He pitched a whole six innings, giving up just two earned runs and striking out six, as the Blue Jays won the game 5–2 in extra innings and went to the 2016 American League Division Series to play the Texas Rangers.

The news that Stroman had prevailed in his arbitration dispute and would earn a salary of $3.4 million for the 2017 campaign was released on February 14, 2017.

With 13 victories, 164 strikeouts, and a 3.09 ERA in 201 innings, Stroman concluded the 2017 campaign. He became the fifth pitcher in the previous 20 years to reach 200 innings in a season after surpassing the 200-inning threshold.

Once more, he led all big league pitchers in ground ball percentage (62.1%) and fly ball percentage (19.7%).

On February 15, 2018, Stroman stated through his Twitter account that he had lost his arbitration case and would get $6.5 million for the season instead of his requested compensation of $6.9 million.

In exchange for pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson, the Toronto Blue Jays traded Stroman to the New York Mets on July 28, 2019, along with monetary considerations.

The Mets gave Stroman a qualifying offer worth $18.9 million for the 2021 campaign following the 2020 campaign. Stroman accepted the qualifying offer on November 11.

In 2021, Stroman finished first in the Mets’ starting rotation with 179 innings pitched, 10 victories, and 158 strikeouts. To play with the Chicago Cubs, Stroman inked a $71 million two-year contract on December 1, 2021, which included a player option for a third year.
