Giovanni Pezzoli, drummer and co-founder of Stadio, died on December 29, 2022. The news was given by Gaetano Curreri’s own band on the social profiles: “Unfortunately Giovanni left us at 21.00 this evening”.

Giovanni Pezzoli Cause of Death

Pezzoli was 70 years old. He had been struck by a serious illness in the night between 24 and 25 March 2016, while he was on vacation in the mountains and a few weeks after the Stadio victory in Sanremo with one of the band’s most famous songs, One day you will tell me. It was to play the winning piece that the drummer returned to the stage for the first time the following August. Since then, the co-founder of one of the best-known bands in Italian music has never returned to play, replaced in the meantime by Adriano Molinari.

His conditions have been deteriorating over time, until the news of a new illness accused last November 29th. However, the details of his illness were never disclosed.

Pezzoli, born in Bologna on May 14, 1952, had founded the Stadio band in 1981 together with Gaetano Curreri. Already in 1962, as a boy, watching the first editions of the Sanremo Festival, he tried to follow the rhythm of the songs broadcast; he builds a rudimentary drum set out of half-empty drums of detergent, played with knitting needles and a pedal built with Meccano parts and hair curler springs.

Pezzoli began playing drums at 13 on songs by Cream, Vanilla Fudge, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Dik Dik.

At the age of 18, in 1970, for the carnival party, he played at the Bologna sports hall with his group Gli Indecisi: the guest star of the occasion was Lucio Dalla. A few days later Dalla called him and offered him an engagement for a few evenings in San Martino di Castrozza, to replace his usual drummer who had fallen ill. From this moment begins a long collaboration with Dalla that will lead him to play on almost all of his albums, until 1992.

In the spring of 1981 Stadio was officially founded: for his entire musical career he will be part of it as a drummer.
