At the age of six, Holt began singing on an Oklahoma City radio station, and by the age of ten, she was performing with bandleader Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

In the 1950s, she won several talent and beauty pageants and appeared in minor television and film roles.

After appearing in a singers’ workshop (Phil Moore’s “Get Your Act Together”) at Studio One in Los Angeles in July 1978, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, and Dinah Shore booked Holt to appear on their television talk shows.
