A former All-Star Gaelic footballer who has played at senior level for the County Dublin team for almost 15 years, he retired from the county side in 2005 and enjoyed a further four years playing for the club Na Fianna.

After winning the All-Ireland with Dublin in 1995, Farrell went on to captain his county, winning six Leinster championships, one National League title, and three county championships with his club. He managed the Dublin minor football team in 2011 and 2012 and was appointed senior team manager for Na Fianna in 2018.
