Doctors at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, urged that the child’s life support should be turned off and that the ventilator should be removed.

But his parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, insisted on continuing the treatment, claiming that the child’s heart was still beating and that he was clutching his mother’s hand.

Mrs. Justice Arbuthnot was requested by lawyers representing the Royal London Hospital’s governing trust, Barts Health NHS Trust, to decide what steps were in Archie’s best interests.

The judge stated in a written ruling: “I discovered that Archie died at 12 p.m. on May 31, 2022, just a few hours after his MRI scans.

“I believe that irreversible loss of brain stem function has been proven unequivocally.
