Subsequently, he held positions with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Liberal Party in Victoria.

In politics, Tehan was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010, succeeding David Hawker in the Division of Wannon. He relocated to Hamilton to reside in the electorate. Throughout his tenure, he held various ministerial positions in Coalition governments under Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison, including Minister for Defence Materiel, Defence Personnel, Veterans’ Affairs, Social Services, Education, and Trade, Tourism, and Investment.

Despite initially supporting Tony Abbott, Dan Tehan later backed Malcolm Turnbull during leadership challenges within the Liberal Party. In the Morrison government, he served as Minister for Education, where he initiated reviews on academic freedom and proposed policy changes regarding university course fees.

In a cabinet reshuffle in December 2020, Tehan was appointed Minister for Trade. Following the Coalition’s defeat in the 2022 federal election, he assumed the immigration and citizenship portfolio in the shadow cabinet led by Peter Dutton.

Tehan’s political stance aligns with the Centrist faction of the Liberal Party, although he previously identified with the centre-right faction during the Morrison government. He opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage but ultimately voted in favor of it in parliament. He has also advocated for the protection of religious freedoms through legislation.
