Before winning Ward 23 Scarborough North, Cynthia Lai, one of the four new candidates elected in 2018, had a long career as a successful realtor.
Cynthia Lai, a councilor for the city of Toronto who was up for reelection in the municipal election on Monday, has passed away.
She clocked in at 68 years old.
The Ward 23 Scarborough North councilor’s passing was announced Friday afternoon by her campaign manager, Hratch Aynedjian.
Lai passed away in a hospital while being attended by family, according to Aynedjian. She “championed the causes of her constituency” and provided services to people in the neighborhood in line with the demographics of the ward, the man claimed.

No further statement will be made because the family has requested privacy. Lai had been battling an illness throughout the year, according to Aynedjian, who spoke to CP24.
Nevertheless, the councilwoman decided to compete for re-election in the spring once her health improved. Lai was very private, so Aynedjian did not know the intricacies of her condition.
Flags at several local structures, including City Hall and the Scarborough Civic Centre, have been flown at half-staff in the councilor’s honor. On Friday, Nathan Phillips Square’s Toronto sign was similarly dimmed.
Starting on Sunday, condolence books will be set up in the rotundas of City Hall and the Scarborough Civic Centre for anyone who wishes to write in. Following the Municipal Elections Act, the election will proceed as if the deceased candidate had not been nominated if there are at least two additional candidates.
To represent Scarborough North, three additional people are running. A notice of Lai’s passing will be posted in each of the 35 polling locations in Ward 23 as the city stated that ballots with Lai’s name on them have already been printed and cannot be changed in time for Monday’s election.
The city declared that votes cast for the candidate on election day, as well as those already voted via early voting and mail-in voting, would not be taken into account.
