He is the youngest of two sons of George Laettner and Bonnie Laettner. His father was a newspaper press paint printer while his mother was a teacher. He is an American with Polish descent. Laettner attended the private Nichols School in Buffalo, New York. As he was from a poor background, he received a financial aid package which paid a substantial part of his tuition. Over the course of his collegiate career, he averaged 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while making almost half of his three-pointers.
Laettner was Duke’s star player in his final two seasons, leading the Blue Devils to the first two national titles in the school’s history. During his sophomore years, his efforts led his team to a runner-up and Final Four appearance in his freshman year. Laettner holds the record as played 23 out of a maximum possible 24 NCAA tournament games, winning 21.
Laettner was selected 1st round, 3rd overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1992 NBA draft. He went on to play for the Timberwolves for 4 seasons being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 1996.
