Stanley’s influence extended beyond his church and denomination through In Touch Ministries, an organization he founded in 1977 with a mission to spread the Gospel and strengthen local churches. The ministry quickly gained popularity, reaching people across the globe through its half-hour religious television program called “The Chapel Hour,” which aired in 1972. The Christian Broadcasting Network began airing the show in 1978, and since then, it has been translated into 50 languages and broadcasted on approximately 500 radio stations and 300 television stations in the United States alone. In Touch also publishes a magazine and offers audio and video programming on its website.

Stanley’s teachings covered a wide range of topics, from personal finance and parenting to emotional and relationship issues. He believed fervently in the inerrancy of the Bible, and his writings and broadcasts reflect this belief. In 1985, he was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, a position he held for two terms from 1984 to 1986.

In addition to his preaching and writing, Stanley was also known for his willingness to engage with his audience through Q&A segments. He launched “Bring It Home,” a segment that aired after his sermons, to answer questions from listeners and help them better understand his teachings. In 2007, he introduced his “30 Life Principles,” which became a regular feature of his TV and radio programs.

In 2020, Stanley retired as senior pastor of First Baptist Church and assumed the role of pastor emeritus, but continued his work with In Touch Ministries. Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to spreading the Gospel and helping people build a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

Charles Stanley Wife

Stanley’s wife of more than 40 years, Anna J. Stanley, filed for divorce on June 22, 1993, following their separation in spring of 1992. The two of them agreed that Anna would amend the lawsuit to seek a legal separation instead, while seeking reconciliation. She again filed for divorce on March 20, 1995. The Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta (then-WAFS) took Stanley’s daily broadcast off the air during that time, as managers concluded that there was no sign of reconciliation.[citation needed] The Stanleys were legally separated at the time that divorce papers were filed for the last time on February 16, 2000. A judge signed the final divorce decree on May 11, 2000.

Their divorce caused a minor controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention. The matter was complicated by reports that Stanley had said he would resign as pastor if he got divorced. At the time of their separation, he said that he did not believe that it would result in divorce; however after he was divorced, the members of his church overwhelmingly voted to keep him on as pastor. According to First Baptist Atlanta’s bylaws, Stanley was allowed to remain as pastor as long as he did not remarry. Anna Stanley died on November 10, 2014.

Stanley had a daughter named Becky; Stanley occasionally mentioned her in his sermons. Stanley’s son, Andy, is the pastor of North Point Community Church in nearby Alpharetta, Georgia.
