Bush Burning Caused Ede Poly Fire, Says Osun Fire Service

Osun State Fire Service has linked fire that razed an uncompleted female hostel in South Campus of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State on Wednesday to bush burning in Jere Area, where the campus is located.

The Fire Service said the raging fire from bush burning spread to the premises of the polytechnic late Wednesday and razed parts of a storey building said to be a female hostel.

Although no life was lost, the Service put estimated worth of the properties lost to the incident at over N10 million.

Administrative Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Fatai Aremu, in a chat with our correspondent, said “some people must have set a nearby bush on fire. And the fire spread into the premises of the polytechnic. It affected an uncompleted storey building.

“Upper floor was severely damaged. Ede Fire Station personnel were the first to arrive at the scene. They later sent for backup from Osogbo. So, men from Okefia Fire Station and Federal Fire Service assisted to subdue the fire. The estimated worth of property lost to the incident was put at over N10million.”

The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Sola Lawal, also said the building affected by the incident was a female hostel that was still under construction.

He, however, commended the men of Osun State Fire Service and their Federal counterpart for responding quickly to the distress call, which according to him, prevented escalation.
