Buhari, Atiku Shake Hands At Second Peace Accord (Photos)
President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, the PDP candidate, came to Abuja to sign a peace agreement at the International Conference Center (ICC).
Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), and former vice – president Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, on Wednesday shook hands on the second peace agreement aimed at peaceful elections.
They shook hands at the instigation of Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf, former president of Liberia, who leads the ECOWAS observation mission.
In the meantime, President Buhari urged fellow presidential candidates to commit to the final result, as announced by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), in the upcoming elections.
Like former President Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku has said in the same vain that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
Mahmood Yakubu, president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Abdulsalami Abubakar, president of the National Peace Committee, are also present at the signing of the peace agreement.
Patricia Scotland, Commonwealth Secretary – General ; Mathew Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, and other members of the National Peace Committee (NPC), are in attendance.
Former head of state Yakubu Gowon is also present to witness the historic event at the ICC.
Speaking at the event, Atiku said, with the support of the international committee, Nigerian democracy has matured over the years.
Scotland said that the National Peace Agreement signed by the major presidential candidates in the 2019 general election is in line with the Commonwealth’s values and principles.
She called on all parties to ensure that elections in Nigeria are peaceful, free, fair and credible.
After the cancelation of his visit to Nigeria less than 48 hours before the event, former US president Bill Clinton had withdrawn from the agreement.
