Blake Snell Career

In the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, the Tampa Bay Rays picked Snell. He made his major league debut with the Rays' Gulf Coast Rays, going 1-2 with an ERA of 3.08 across 11 games (eight starts).

He pitched for the Princeton Rays in 2012, compiling a record of 5-1 and a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 2013, compiling a record of 4-9 and a 4.27 ERA in 23 starts.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs promoted Snell from Bowling Green in May of 2014. He faced the Daytona Cubs on August 2 and threw a no-hitter that was cut short by weather. In Stone Crabs' history, it was the first no-hitter.

On April 23, 2016, at Yankee Stadium, Snell made his debut after being promoted to the major leagues. His first inning revealed some nervousness as he let up a run on a wild pitch, but he settled down after that. In the second inning, he struck out the side and retired 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced.

Snell made 19 starts for Tampa during the 2016 campaign, posting a 6-8 record, 3.54 ERA, and 98 strikeouts over 89 innings.

Snell began the 2018 season as Chris Archer's backup and the number two starter overall. He tied an AL record on June 3 at Safeco Field against the Seattle Mariners by striking out his first seven batters.

Snell signed a $50 million, five-year deal on March 21 to keep him with the Rays through the 2023 campaign; it was the biggest contract offered to a pitcher in the major league before salary arbitration.

Snell, who was selected as the 2019 season's Opening Day starter during spring training, took the loss in a 5-1 loss to Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros.

Snell stirred up significant debate prior to the start of the postponed MLB season when he declared that his income was more important to him than his health while deciding whether or not to resume playing during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Rays sent catcher Francisco Mejia, prospects Luis Patio, Blake Hunt, and Cole Wilcox, as well as Snell to the San Diego Padres on December 29, 2020.

Snell was sent to the Padres as the team's number two pitcher. Snell's performance in 2021 showed some regression; he finished the year with a 7-6 record and a 4.20 ERA in 27 appearances.

Due to the lockout, Snell's preparations for the 2022 season were put on hold, and he lagged behind the other starting pitchers in spring training in terms of innings pitched.

Snell did not throw in the game during his first planned start of the regular season because he experienced adductor stiffness once more while he warmed up in the bullpen.

Snell pitched 323 innings against the Phillies on May 18 after being reinstated from the injured list. The Padres decided to use a 6-man rotation after Snell made his comeback in order to retain MacKenzie Gore in the starting lineup and reduce arm fatigue.
