He was an American politician, author, and diplomat who served as the 30th governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011.

Before he was elected as governor in 2002, and later ran an unsuccessful bid as the first Latino U.S. presidential nominee, Richardson served 14 years as a congressman representing northern New Mexico.
Over the past three decades, Richardson traveled the world negotiating and securing the release of Americans imprisoned overseas in Bangladesh, North Korea, Sudan, Colombia, and Iraq, among other countries
In 2022, he traveled to Moscow to discuss the release of detained basketball star, Britney Griner, who was arrested at a Moscow airport when authorities found hash oil in her luggage.
The former U.S. diplomat, congressman, and energy secretary, Bill Richardson died at 75 on Friday, 1 September 2023 his foundation, Richardson Center for Global Engagement announced.
“Governor Richardson passed away peacefully in his sleep last night,” said Mickey Bergman, vice-president of the Richardson’s foundation, which he (Richardson) founded to promote international peace and dialogue.
“He lived his entire life in the service of others – including both his time in government and his subsequent career helping to free people held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad,” Bergman added. “The world has lost a champion for those held unjustly abroad.”
Before Richardson passed away, he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in August 2023 in recognition of his work in saving detained Americans, most recently WNBA player Brittney Griner, who was arrested at a Moscow airport when authorities found hash oil in her luggage. Griner was released last December after having been detained for nearly 10 months.
