For 24 years, Charalambous represented the Palmers Green ward on the Enfield Council. Additionally, he held the position of Associate Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture, Localism, and Leisure.

In the 2005 election for Epping Forest, Eleanor Laing of the Conservative Party defeated Labour's Charalambous.

After running for Enfield Southgate in 2010 and 2015, he was elected in 2017 and succeeded in unseating David Burrowes, who had represented the area as an MP since 2005.
