During a game against the Sheffield Steelers at Utilita Arena on October 28, 2023, Johnson suffered a fatal injury to his neck after Steelers player Matt Petgrave’s skate[19] sliced it during an on-ice collision.

Following the collision, Johnson tried to skate to the team bench before passing out on the ice. Players from both teams surrounded Johnson with their arms in a protective circle as paramedics attended to him before screens were installed and the arena was evacuated.

At the age of 29, Johnson was officially declared dead and moved to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. While Johnson’s family was informed, the public was not informed of Johnson’s passing until the next morning.

On July 6, 2017, Johnson decided to terminate his undergraduate career early and signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins after attending the team’s prospect development camp.

In the 2017–18 season, Johnson was the second-leading scorer for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, an American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. On March 21, 2019, he made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning 2–1 at the Nashville Predators.

On October 12, 2019, he scored his only goal in a 7-4 victory against the Minnesota Wild in his native state. He appeared in 13 NHL games overall.

Johnson decided to accept a contract overseas for the 2020–21 season with the Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) on December 15, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic postponing the North American season.

Johnson, who played in a top-six forward position for the Redhawks, finished the regular season with seven goals and twelve points in 21 games. On March 27, 2020, he decided to break his contract and head back to North America.

Johnson signed with the Los Angeles Kings’ principal affiliate, the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League, on April 6, 2021, as a free agent to play with them for the balance of the 2020–21 season. Johnson contributed an offensive presence, scoring 11 points in 14 games.

Johnson played 28 games during the regular season with the Reign into the 2021–2022 season, scoring one goal and dishing out six points. On February 17, 2022, he was dealt to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in return for future considerations.

Johnson decided to continue his European career as a free agent in the upcoming off-season. On September 12, 2022, he inked a one-year contract with the German team Augsburger Panther of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).

Johnson scored seven goals and accrued 22 points in 45 regular season games for the Panthers in 2022–23, but he was unable to keep the team from finishing in relegation. Johnson departed the team on March 17, 2023, when his contract expired.

Johnson reached an agreement to play for the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in August 2023.
