“Ezra was only a Goshen College student for a short time but had already become an important part of our campus community. Gilberto Perez Jr., vice president for student life and dean of students, expressed how much he would be missed. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ezra’s family and friends, who cherished him.” The community of Goshen College is in grief following the death of a student-athlete.

Rustin Nyce, Kogei’s coach said, “He quickly became an integral member of our cross country team and campus, He expressed a desire to be seen as the person he was. He was a wonderful storyteller, easy to get along with, and had an infectious smile. Ezra loved being at Goshen and mentioned often that he was so thankful for his new community. He ran with his friends, engaged in deeply meaningful conversations, and was quick to accept any meal invitation that came his way.”
According to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office investigation, Ezra Kipruto Kogei, 25, a sophomore nursing student was driving C.R. 16 and turned in a curve but his car failed to navigate the curve. As the result, the car hits the pole causing a collision.
Kogei suffered injuries to his head, neck, waist, and legs and was transferred to Elkhart General Hospital, then to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he died. For a week, he was admitted to the hospital and was treated at Memorial Hospital in South Bend for his injuries. Later, he passed away on Saturday.

A Kenyan student was driving east on C.R. 16 at 12:51 a.m. When he turned a curve east of C.R. 1, his car failed to navigate the curve and slid off the south side of the road, hitting a mailbox and then a utility pole on the driver’s side.
Kogei was seriously injured in this accident. There were no other people in the vehicle other than Kogei. Officials reported that he wore a seat belt at that time.
